A Rich History
1947 Origins
The Westminster Africa Business Group (WABG) traces its origins back to 1947, when it was founded as the Conservative West Africa Committee. At the time, it served as a bridge between British political interests and the High Commissions of West African nations, providing a forum for sharing political and commercial developments with members, businesses, and visiting delegations.
A Pan-African Expansion (1995-1997)
By the mid-1990s, the organisation had broadened its remit. With support from the Conservative Central Office, its focus extended beyond West Africa to cover Sub-Saharan Africa more widely. This expansion welcomed individuals and businesses with connections to Eastern and Southern Africa. In 1997, the group adopted a more explicitly commercial orientation, aligning with the continent’s growing economic and political significance.
Uniting Beyond Politics (2012)
A major rebranding came in 2012, when the organisation became the Westminster Africa Business Group. The new name reflected its inclusive, non-partisan character and its role as a platform for engaging stakeholders across the political spectrum.
Strengthening the Organisation (2025)
Most recently, in 2025, the Group entered a new chapter with the appointment of Sir Gavin Williamson MP, former Secretary of State for Defence and Secretary of State for Education, as Chair. This signalled its continued growth and relevance in strengthening UK-Africa relations.
Chaired by sitting MPs only
The Westminster Africa Business Group is a membership organisation, not a private company or lobbying body. Its Constitution requires that the Chair is always a sitting Member of Parliament, ensuring the Group remains firmly rooted in Westminster tradition. It provides a platform for discussion and exchange between members, policymakers, and stakeholders on UK–Africa relations.
