What is the Westminster Africa Business Group?
The Westminster Africa Business Group (WABG) is a member-led network that connects UK and African businesses, diplomats, and policymakers. Established in 1947, the Group facilitates dialogue, promotes trade and investment, and provides a trusted forum for engagement.
-
Who can join the Group?
Membership is open to companies, organisations, and individuals with professional or commercial interests in Africa, or who are actively engaged in strengthening UK–Africa business relations.
-
What are the benefits of membership?
Members gain access to quarterly lunches, embassy-hosted events, high-level networking opportunities, trade missions, and our annual House of Commons reception. The Group also provides a neutral platform for building relationships and sharing expertise.
-
Is the Group a lobbying organisation?
No. WABG is not a lobbying body or a private company. We are a nonprofit, member-led organisation with no shareholders and no financial backers. This structure ensures that our work remains accountable to the collective interests and priorities of our members. All funds raised are reinvested directly into the organisation to advance the Group’s shared aims and objectives, rather than being allocated to staff costs.
-
How is the Group funded?
The Group is funded through membership subscriptions and event contributions. We do not receive government funding or any sponsorship that could compromise our independence.
-
Can non-members attend events?
Selected events may be open to guests by invitation, but the majority are reserved for members and their organisations. Membership ensures priority access.
-
How do I apply for membership?
You can apply by completing the membership form on our website or by contacting us directly. Applications are reviewed by the Committee to ensure alignment with the Group’s objectives.
-
Is there a focus on specific industries?
The Group spans a broad range of sectors, including energy, infrastructure, finance, agriculture, and technology. Our events are designed to reflect current opportunities and challenges across these industries.
-
How is WABG different from other Africa-focused organisations?
Unlike some bodies, WABG has a long heritage, is entirely member-led, and provides a neutral platform. Our emphasis is on genuine networking, direct engagement, and building strong ties between the United Kingdom and Africa for the benefit of all members.
